Dear Sir/Madam,

Net neutrality is of utmost importance to the growth of any country, more importantly a country like ours which has seen what its like when a few have licence to control the rest in the economy. The internet is a level playing field and our country is one of the few doing exceedingly well. This is the new chapter in the growth and development of our economy and our people.

Allowing a few telecom companies to make larger profits at the expense of the rest of the country is not only myopic, it is completely detrimental to the lives of everyone else. According to some estimates, close to 500 million Indians will be using the internet in 5 years. This is not what I expected from the government when they talked about development.

The internet provides this great opportunity for all Indians to have access to everything it has to offer. Throttling this will essentially control how much access one has based on how much one is willing to pay. Our country has been greatly responsible in regulating business from going against the interest of the people. This was well demonstrated when the global financial crisis hit and we did not face the worst of it because our banks were not allowed to behave that way.

This is the time to be firm and stand by the principles of an open and free internet. The USA has recently rules in favour. Netherlands has done it too. We can set a precedent for all developing countries by disallowing any plan that goes against complete net neutrality. There are several other countries who will be looking to us for our decision apart from all our citizens. I request you with all reason and feelings to stop this before it becomes a problem.

Regards,
Pratik Modi
