Dear Sir/Madam,
Tomorrow you get an electricity bill that bills you for the units you've used and additionally you're also charged on the fact that your laptop runs on electricity, your washing machine and all other electrical appliances.
This is the equivalent of an internet that doesn't believe in the concept of net neutrality. The FCC in the US recognized this and squashed the law. The ugly monster once reared its head in India sometime in December with Airtel adopting a similar stance but they had to back down due to the public backlash.
It has once again appeared to threaten the freedom of the internet. The fact that all traffic should be treated the same is the only reason why we have a company like Flipkart able to come up. Tomorrow if a company starts charging high premium for speed, a start-up might not be able to compete with the more-established firms. This can lead to monopolies that are detrimental to a free-flowing market.
The only people who will gain from this would be ISP providers. The customers and other businesses would be at their mercy. I request you to consider these apprehensions of people and to stop the push to create different tariff rates for different type of data speeds.
Thanks,
Joel Elias
P.S.
A comedian very succinctly put the whole thing very well.
