Subject: My opinion on net neutrality
To: advqos@trai.gov.in

Dear sir,

As an internet user, it has come to my notice that a sword hangs over net neutrality due to the proposed data differential pricing system suggested in the coming month.
Firstly, I would like to explain why this system would not show any significant changes in profits as telecom cos suggest, but rather shall become a real cause for concern.

All telecom cos have made their foundations earning on overheads, royalty, merchandising, advertising space, corporate or entertainment tie-ups and so on. This is not even inclusive of their earnings from network customers. Hence they do not 'need' the extra profit, but 'want' it. Which really brings their ethical responsibility into question considering how far they can go should the measure come through.

Secondly, what this measure, if implemented, does do for the consumer, is to fence off the internet and demand royalty just because they are the service providing intermediaries.

If the Internet and its billions of domains were the bona fide property of ISPs, it would be a different story. But to control access to a worldwide network which is not legally owned by any single person is a direct violation of the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression (Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution).

Coming to their argument that 'those who can pay more shall get better service', we know looking at the already cluttered arena of competitors, that by no means does 'pay more' guarantee 'get more'. Hence the entire measure is only again disproportionate gain for the companies and losses for customers.

Thirdly, the Internet is by nature a free medium. Trying to control it has not ended well for most entities and telecom cos will be no different. They've spent years catering to customers and should only know too well that exodus en masse of users will negate all the profits they 'claim'.

The quality of every other medium that went this way for the sake of revenue is there for all to see. The PCI and the I&B ministry will tell you this.

Hence, resting my case, I appeal to you, as a concerned citizen, to strike down the entire proposal of differential pricing and ensure that the Internet does not become a multi-lane highway to hell for the user. Because this country does not need any more toll-posts, particularly nation-wide.

Thank You
