To whom it may concern,
I am writing this email in regards to the recent proposal for changes in Internet laws that would kill net neutrality and freedom to access services over the Internet without being lynched by telecom companies for overcharging consumers such as myself. Internet access on mobile 2G/3G is anyways not free and it costs a lot of money to purchase Internet data packs. If the telecom companies would charge us extra for usage of certain apps and websites, it would be grossly unfair to the general public to pay additional premium prices for such services.
Telecom companies are simply being greedy by complaining about losing revenue of calls/messages to such Internet/mobile applications. However in the wake of such apps penetrating the market, telecom companies will also earn much more thru the sale of data packs with the increase in the usage of apps. I personally spend more money every month on the purchase of data packs than on calling or messaging. I would have spent much less had I not been able to access all the Internet services I am currently accessing. Such measures of removing net neutrality would also reduce the demand for data packs drastically and may cause more harm than good.
Therefore net neutrality is a win-win situation for both telecom operators and Internet users who pay these telecom giants thousands of crores of rupees. By killing net neutrality, these telecom companies are trying to be very greedy and put a huge financial burden on the general public. This move may not even benefit them. It is my appeal to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to not allow the telecom giants to win and allow the common man to access the Internet freely without the burden of paying additional premiums. We Internet users are already paying a lot of money for using the Internet and any additional burdens would be unfair and unjust. I hope that you would consider the freedom of net neutrality for all Internet users in this fast paced and advancing digital world and such measures would only deter people from using Internet services which are an essential part of people's life. Our government is promoting a 'Digital India' campaign on one hand and then trying to remove net neutrality on the other.
