Dear TRAI,
I am writing to express my concern against the actions that telecom carriers are taking to restrict fair access to the internet (Net Neutrality) - in particular Airtel, Vodafone & Reliance. The internet is a vital resource to my growth, and I pay for my usage. It helps me communicate, work, and thrive as a citizen and entrepreneur in India. If telecom operators start asking us customers (and our customers) to pay on the basis of which services will fill their pockets the most, we are allowing telcos to control a vital and necessary technological resource. A resource that can make or break India's future. On the one hand, we are talking about the NOFN, and on the other, we are doling it out to the Telecom Operators???
This is completely unfair and harms India's growth prospects in the global market, and more importantly impacts people like me who are trying to create something of value using the inherent qualities of the Internet. Our respected Prime Minister talks of 'Make in India' - and your consultation paper reeks of charging us to make anything here!
The fact is that the growth of telecoms and the well-being of the internet can happen simultaneously. It has the world over - in the US, UK and other much more developed economies. I'm asking for a framework to ensure long term and fair access for all services regardless of size. I want my generation and those that come after me to have unfettered access to the Internet, with no telcos or ISPs having the ability to charge for specific services I use on top of it. The internet is a resource that we pay the same telcos for, and will continue to do so. However as the regulators of the telecom domain in India - I implore you to provide India the opportunity of become a global powerhouse - not a giant shackled in chains by Telecom operators!
Regards,
Mrigank Tripathi
