Sir / Madam:
Reference is made to Consultation Paper No: 2/2015 put out on the website of TRAI, inviting comments by the stakeholders.
I, as a user of services of telecom companies/ISPs to access the internet hereby write to communicate my strong dissent with regard to the proposed regulatory framework of OTT services/allowing telecom companies to seek differential pricing/special deals with few websites/charging separately for OTT in any form. I urge you to maintain status quo on net neutrality.
You may give due consideration to the following points in arriving at any regulation, if at all.
- Had the telecom companies factored
in business plans their legitimate and fundamental right to extract money out
of popular websites and apps (facebook, twitter, youtube, whatsapp etc) in bidding
irrationally for spectrum and investing huge sums of money on infrastructure? If
there were no such handful of heavy traffic drivers on the net today and if all
traffic on the net was evenly spread out across countless websites, would the telcos
have attempted to do what they are currently seeking to do?
- Can anyone base their business
model on the ability to extort money out of inventions (E.g. VoIP/video calling)
and creations of third parties (facebook, twitter, youtube, google etc.), because cartelization in disguise is possible? Isn’t
it some form of extortion?
- Were telcos responsible for the
huge popularity of those websites and apps? If the answer is ‘no’, why should telcos
have a free ride and be allowed to indulge in rent seeking?
- Isnt attempt to monetize somebody else's popularity abuse by telecom companies of their dominant position ?
Thanks
