To whomsoever it may concern
I am writing this mail to express my concern over the recent proposals by large Telecom Carriers (ISPs) for monopolization of Internet violating one's right for fair access to it. Internet is a vital resource whose importance has even been acknowledged by the current govt with our PM Narendra Modi regularly proclaiming the advent of this Digital Age and how it can be used for the development and prosperity of our country.
If the Telecom Carriers are able to charge data with varied content separately, then this would be a violation of one's privacy as they inspect the data deeply. They would monopolize and control the traffic flow by greatly favoring the services which pay the most and restricting the others. This would kill off their competition instantly and would not allow new start-ups and business ventures to thrive even if they are significantly better than the large companies. Healthy competition is essential to any market without which there is no progress and constant exploitation of the customers.
The OTT services which the Telecom Carriers claim cause a loss of revenue due to which they are proposing restrictions on Net Neutrality, are in reality great sources of revenue and the prime reasons for people opting for the costly 3G and 4G data services. The truth is that the Telecom Carriers being shamelessly greedy want to push us back into the ages of 1 Rs/min calls and 1 Rs/SMS where texting, chatting and video calling services at unknown. By regulating the charges based on content they are controlling what I should view on internet and how I should it strangles my right for fair access to internet. There should be a regulation encouraging fair access of internet which in turn may slow the growth of ISPs , but the growth of internet should go together with fair access. Many developed countries have recognized the need for fair internet e.g. Netherlands, USA. The recent verdict by FCC also encourages a fair and equal access internet. It is an important decision and the people will not accept any mistake on the part of its leaders. There should be a legislation to support net neutrality i.e. all data should be treated equally.
