Dear Madam/ Sir,
I write to you in response to the question posed to the Indian citizenry pertaining to net neutrality.
I urge you not to go ahead and allow differential pricing for usage of content on the internet. In my opinion, this proposed action militates against the very concept of an open and free internet and by allowing certain telecom companies to profit from the trend of using certain content over others on the internet, TRAI and the Government of India would be doing India a great disservice.
The focus, instead, should be put on how best to spread internet access across India in a faster, well connected and seamless manner. By allowing the creation of walls by telecom providers and ISPs, TRAI would be facilitating the creation of entry barriers dictated by profit-oriented private players against the multifarious benefits of the internet. In the short run, it may seem like a decent idea to allow these private players to earn a profit on the infrastructure that they seem to have built (as a favour to us!), but I assure you, that in the long run, the ill-effects of this move will resonate and TRAI will have only itself to blame for it.
Hence, please scrap the proposal to move against net neutrality in India and look towards how best Indians may be served by allowing MORE access not LESS.
Sincerely,
Kushan Chakraborty
