Respected Sir/Madam,
For the past few days I've been hearing of this "Net Neutrality" issue which just popped out a fee days ago.
As a common citizen of this country I feel charging different rates for different Internet services would be a horrible nightmare for me and for all those people out there. At a time when the Internet has become an integral part of our lives, such a move will be really hurting. It's not only about doing a call or sending a text message over Whatsapp, there is a lot of other stuff on internet. Being an engineering student, I need internet to download some educational stuffs like YouTube videos, ebooks etc. apart from using other services like WhatsApp, Facebook, hike etc. to keep in touch with my mates and family. Now paying different stuffs for above can be tricky. Maybe I will be left to choose between the two's while I want the both and may end up paying much more extra than what I pay now( data packs are already expensive if you know). This is the biggest fear i feel about paying the differential rates for different services.
Here's something I found on Internet :
Tech entrepreneur Mahesh Murthy eloquently explains the consequences of such a move. “In effect, if Airtel doesn’t like YouTube but wants to push its own video app Wynk – it wants the right to offer that for free while charging you a bomb to access YouTube. If you use Reliance, which has already struck a deal with Facebook called Internet.org, you can access Bing for free, but you have to pay to access Google. You have access to BabaJobs for free, while you have to pay for Naukri.com.”
Flipkart has, reportedly, already signed up with Bharti Airtel for their new platform called Airtel Zero. This platform will allow companies to buy data to offer their apps to consumers for free. But, as a consumer, you will have access to only those portals and websites which have signed up with Airtel. To access any other websites or apps, you will have to shell out extra for data charges. As per reports, Airtel will collaborate with 80-100 internet companies, including top e-commerce portals.
So in my view, agreed with the fact that VOIP over apps like WhatsApp, messenger, hangout will affect the telecom companies but already have been earning much more than what they were 5-10 years back. Instead I think they should work on improving their services. So finally,
I DEMAND FOR NET NEUTRALITY AND I DON'T WANNA PAY DIFFERENT RATES FOR DIFFERENT INTERNET SERVICES.
