Respected Sir,
I am a Computer Engineer currently located at US on an onsite
assignment. I would like to throw light on some of the areas that needs
to be considered before curbing net neutrality i.e, charging differently
for accessing different websites and content in internet.
Internet is designed to be neutral about the data that gets transmitted
through it. If we are curbing net neutrality, we are allowing someone to
see what data we are communicating while we are connected to internet.
ISPs could use deep packet inspection and other methods to know what
data is in there within the packets that gets transmitted through
internet. It may become a security threat, as all our critical
information like bank details, credit/debit card details would be
intercepted by the ISPs.
By introducing an extra layer of checking for charging differently for
different websites, it would result in a significant slowness in
internet speed even if we are subscribed to 8Mbps or more line, because
that extra checking would definitely consume some time.
ISPs claiming to lay special dedicated network to some websites and
thereby charging more for accessing that website to the internet users
is not justifiable to me. Its like you go to a shop, and the shop owner
asks you to pay for using the road that connects his shop to the main
road. It should be the responsibility of the website owner to increase
the bandwidth of their internet connection to accomodate more users
which is the normal case.
Even if we allow ISPs providing normal speed to the subscribers of the
base internet pack and enhanced/greater speeds to the subscribers paying
more for that website, ISPs may intentionally cap the speed of the base
pack to promote the special packs.
Already, most private telecoms except one or two are just sucking hard
earned money from the customers by providing low quality of service and
charging for premium quality. After net neutrality is curbed, they would
be able to suck more money from people. Only person who would gain
profit in this case are the website owners and the ISPs.
We should consider that when a website shakes hand with ISP for any
promotion, they both gain profit even without customers paying anything.
For example, Aircel is offering free access to Wikipedia, so aircel
users are more likely to visit wikipedia and resulting in more people to
use Aircel. Website gains profit by increased number of visitors and ISP
gains profit by increasing their subscriber base.
There are debates going on in the whole world about net neutrality and
till now, it hasn't been curbed anywhere in the world due to the obvious
privacy and security concerns apart from the price point. My suggestion
would be to support net neutrality and most importantly don't let the
ISPs or anyone to intercept our data or charge differently for different
website access.
Hope, you would take the right decision.
Respectfully,
Anish Kumar Mondal
